Choosing a wooden raised garden bed
There are many choices when it comes to picking an outdoor raised garden bed. There are different materials you can choose from ranging from plastic, galvanized to different containers around the house! Wooden raised garden beds remain a constant favorite among many gardeners for various reasons. If you’re considering adding a wooden raised garden bed to your backyard you’ll be happy to know there are many benefits that make them a popular choice for both novice and seasoned gardeners alike.
The material matters! Believe it or not, choosing the right kind of wood is just as important as choosing the overall material of your garden bed. That’s right! You shouldn’t just pick any type of wood for your garden bed. It’s important to choose a wood that is not just aesthetically pleasing but also durable and resistant to decay. Cedar and redwood are excellent choices due to their natural resistance to insects and decay, this ensures a longer lifespan for your raised garden bed.
Size/Height makes a difference! Make it work for you! Gardening can be hard and taxing on the body, when picking a raised garden bed consider how accessible and easy it is to work around. The nice thing about wooden raised garden beds is that you can simply cut them to customize the height! I customized my garden beds by cutting the legs and making them shorter. Unlike a galvanized raised garden bed you can’t exactly change its height like you can a wooden garden bed. Taller beds can be beneficial for individuals with mobility issues, while smaller beds might be ideal for compact spaces. Be sure to check that the width allows easy access to the center.
Assembly and installation, do you want a DIY wooden raised garden bed or a store-bought one? How comfortable are you with power tools? Do you feel like you have the patience and confidence to assemble one? There are wooden raised garden beds that do not require the use of tools, for example, this cedar wooden garden bed from Target. However, be warned wooden raised garden beds that do not require some type of tools may be flimsy and not as sturdy! Don’t feel intimidated, if you simply do not like to spend a lot of time assembling things just know there are options out there!
If you feel comfortable using power tools there are DIY options that provide flexibility in design, while pre-made kits offer convenience and are often designed for easy assembly. Consider your level of expertise, time, and budget when making this decision. I have linked my favorite wooden garden beds here.
Here is a non assembly wooden raised garden bed I bought, the rest have all required tools and a bit more time to assemble.
Sealant and treatment, preserving your investment. Determine whether the wood is treated or if it requires an additional sealant. Some woods, like cedar naturally resist decay, but others may benefit from treatment to prolong their lifespan. All of my wooden raised garden beds are unfinished wood, I do not like to add anything else to the wood however there are gardeners out there that do. You can apply a non-toxic sealant if you want to to protect the wood from moisture and UV rays, however, please please check and research the products you are using first. Staying informed of what you add to your wood is extremely important!
Budget, don’t go nose first and decide you want to buy 3, 5, 8 wooden garden beds because the total can quickly add up. Determine a budget that works for you and don’t be afraid to switch up the brand of your raised garden beds. It is tempting to look for the most affordable option however investing in a quality wooden raised garden bed will pay off in the long run. If you really want one but have a low budget consider buying a small one to start with. Starting off small allows for better practice and also helps you not make the mistake of overcommitting.
Choosing the perfect wooden raised garden bed that works for you and your garden involves careful consideration of materials, size, construction, and location. By keeping these essential factors in mind you’ll be well on your way to creating a thriving and visually stunning elevated garden. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a novice, the right wooden raised garden bed can make a significant difference in the success of your garden.
