Colorado Gardening – (Denver Metro Region)

Colorado gardening, where the high-altitude landscapes of the Denver Metro region come alive with the colors and scents of flourishing blooms. Our Centennial State is a beautiful place to grow a garden! As a garden blogger with a passion for cultivating green spaces, I wanted to share links tailored specifically for beginners considering gardening in Colorado. Our state’s unique climate and diverse geography offer both challenges and opportunities for new gardeners. This post will mainly focus on general information and helpful links.

An important thing to pay attention to is your USDA Hardiness zone, Colorado has a range of hardiness zones varying from Zone 3a to 7a. Colorado’s diverse topography and elevations contribute to this broad spectrum of hardiness zones. It’s important for gardeners to identify their specific zone to make informed decisions about plant selection and care. Each zone has unique climatic conditions that will affect your garden. You can check your zone by clicking here USDA hardiness zone map.

Denver has a semi-arid climate so efficient watering is necessary. An irrigation schedule will likely be needed if you are gardening in the Denver Metro Region. There are a couple key things to consider when gardening in Colorado, the time of day to water your outdoor garden and frequency. Each city has their own watering restrictions, be sure to check before setting up your irrigation schedule! I’ve listed two wonderful articles I found helpful specific to Colorado/Denver watering (article 1, article 2). Check out this information on rainwater collection that you can use for your garden. It is very important to check within your own city for any restrictions to rain barrels.

If you are unable to start a garden at your residence you can always consider joining a community garden. Colorado, specifically the Denver Metro Region has various community gardens you can choose from! Click here to see more information on active community gardens – Denver Urban Gardens. Another excellent resource is Plant Something Colorado their site is filled with helpful knowledge that is free to access as well as maps where you can find local gardening experts and centers.

The Colorado Gardener lists classes, conferences and events that any gardener might be interested in joining!
