Keeping your tools clean

As gardeners, we pour our time and effort into creating beautiful vibrant green spaces. Yet, there is one thing we often overlook without realizing it, tool hygiene! You may think “what’s the point, I’m just going to add more dirt to it” or “I’ll do it later” but it’s not just about keeping things tidy. Keeping your tools clean, tidy and organized benefits your garden and helps make your gardening experience easier. Don’t make the same rookie mistake I did, here are three reasons why you shouldn’t neglect cleaning your tools.

  1. Prevents the spread of disease – Cleaning your gardening tools is a crucial step in preventing the spread of diseases among your seedlings and mature plants. Soil, debris, and plant residues left on your tools can harbor harmful pathogens and fungi. Thoroughly cleaning your tools can help reduce the risk of transferring diseases from one plant, container or pot to another. The last thing you want to do is accidentally infect your other healthy plants!
  2. Prolongs your tool lifespan – Regular cleaning can extend the lifespan of your gardening tools. Soil and moisture left on metal surfaces can lead to rust and corrosion, which can cause your tools to deteriorate over time. By cleaning and drying your tools after each use, you can help them remain in optimal condition. Who doesn’t want to save money? Prolonging your tool lifespan can save you money from replacements!
  3. Enhance gardening efficiency – Clean tools make for efficient gardening. A sharp, debris-free blade on pruners or shears ensures clean cuts. A well-maintained shovel or trowel allows for smoother digging and planting. By investing a little time in cleaning your tools, you enhance your overall gardening experience and make tasks more enjoyable and effective. One rookie mistake I made was not clean certain trays after use. When it was time to take out the trays, I had to clean them indoors because it was snowy outside, and I could no longer use our hose.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Use a stiff brush or putty knife to remove soil and debris from tools.
  • Wipe metal surfaces with a cloth or sponge dampened with a solution of mild detergent or a mixture of water and vinegar.
  • Dry tools thoroughly after cleaning to prevent rust.

The simple act of cleaning your tools makes a huge difference! It’s a small investment of time and effort that pays off in the form of a healthier garden, longer-lasting tools, and a more efficient gardening experience. So, before you embark on your next gardening adventure, take a moment to show your tools some love—they’ll thank you with bountiful blooms and thriving greenery.

Happy cleaning!
