January Indoor Garden – Update Post

This past week in Colorado we had low temperatures, on Saturday our low was -10 when I checked in the early morning. We had some fluffy snow come down and it looked lovely outside.

Because of the holidays, I had tons of cardboard boxes hanging around the house. I’ve seen many videos talking about how putting cardboard in your garden beds can help when it comes time to grow again. I decided to try it out and put a few pieces of old Amazon boxes into my main beds. I had some leftover dirt from the grow bags I cleaned up and decided to throw it on the garden beds. Unfortunately, I was running late that day and I forgot to water them down but luckily for me it began to get colder and we had some light frost come down. By now the beds are 100% moist from all the snow, I’m hoping that sufficient snowfall will help the cardboard decompose.

My Marigold has been blooming beautifully! There’s a total of four buds coming out that are also getting ready to shine! I’m happy that the Marigold has been so easy to grow indoors. I plan to continue growing Marigolds this season mainly as companion plants.

The Chamomile has also continued to grow well this past week, there’s only one pesky thing that I noticed recently. I noticed a few Fungus gnats flying around my Chamomile last week. I immediately realized that I was likely overwatering my poor Chamomile. I recently heard about a trick for identifying if perhaps one was watering their plants too much. The trick was to hold your plant (if indoors and in a pot) and feel how heavy it was. I did this with all four of my Chamomile and noticed that they were very heavy, I then poked the dirt and did my best to feel the moisture inside the pot. In the past two weeks, I mistakenly overwatered my poor Chamomile. Since then I’ve cut down on the watering and continue to check for gnats. Luckily the gnats have gotten under control and I didn’t do any irreversible damage.

My AeroGarden is something else!!! I have a little mini garden on my kitchen counter!!! Over the weekend when I was sipping on coffee one of my tomato branches began to fall to the side!!! I probably should have predicted that all four of the plants would grow well but I didn’t account for them to fully thrive!! My challenge now is to find a way to provide support to the tomato plants. At the moment I have a chopstick helping me while I figure out what to do but unfortunately I can’t transfer them to a pot in my mini greenhouse. This isn’t a bad problem to have but moving forward I definitely think that I’ll stick to only growing herbs in the AeroGarden and then plant other seeds in the mini greenhouse to save room.

Besides checking in on my indoor garden I’ve began prepping for this upcoming season’s garden. Check out my next blog post to see some ways I’m getting ready this month for my 2024 garden.
